Open Science

Open access (OA) to scientific information and knowledge can accelerate research and innovation processes. At the same time, efficiency in research and development can be increased (fewer duplications) and all members of society can participate in developments. In order to exploit this potential, the European Union is pursuing an open access and open science approach in its funding concepts.

Open Science means, among other things, providing free online access to scientific information - publications and research data.

Publication of project results

For publicly funded EU projects, the Open Science approach means that

  • publications that are peer-reviewed (especially articles in journals) are made available in Open Access (OA),
  • scientific data (belonging to OA publications and/or raw data) are made available as Open Research Data (ORD) where possible.

However, this does not mean that EU project results must generally be published in Open Access: Prior to publication, a decision must be made as to whether the results should be used for other purposes or whether they should be legally protected.

Strategies of Open Access publication

a distinction can be made between pathways to open access and financing options for open access:

  • Golden Open Access
  • Green Open Access
  • Hybrid Model
Open Access and Open Research Data in Horizon Europe

The EC has launched of a platform for open-access, peer-reviewed, and no-cost publications from HORIZON EUROPE projects named Open Research Europe. Publications comprise among others scientific articles, data papers and research data.

Repositories

Repositories are document servers that are used primarily for archiving publication and research data.
